11 Events To Explore This Weekend

Were you able to catch the eclipse on Monday? It was a really spectacular event. We had some family come to town from Kentucky, and we spent a couple hours in a Dublin park to see it. There’s really no describing the experience.

But now it’s back to reality, so I explored the calendars on ColumbusMakesArt.com and here are 11 arts events I’m curious to see this week.

  • Start your weekend today – Wednesday, April 10 – with music from Doug Morgan, Parker MacDonell and Phil Maneri at Natalie’s in Grandview.
  • Wednesday and Thursday, April 10-11, OSU’s department of Theatre, Film and Media Arts hosts the Moving-Image Production Senior Showcase, featuring capstone short film projects by students. It’s free!
  • This week the art space at Kittie’s Cakes in Worthington opened its newest free exhibition featuring the work of oil painter Steven Riggs. See it through April 30.
  • On Thursday, April 11, A Tribe For Jazz hosts a screening of a new short documentary called Exploration. Held at CCAD’s Canzani Center, the free event (registration is required, though) features a Q&A about the documentary and its exploration of the impact of music on our lives.
  • Last weekend Available Light Theatre opened its latest show, You Will Get Sick. It’s gotten excellent reviews, and runs through April 20 at the Studio Two theater in the Riffe Center.
  • This Friday evening, April 12, is the next Franklinton Fridays. While you’re there, you can check out Glass Axis’ annual spring sale.
  • You can also head to the McConnell Arts Center Friday night for an album release party and concert from Laura Camara and the Jake Reed Trio. Tickets are $10 for students and $20 for adults.
  • The Wexner Center welcomes vocalist, flautist and composer Nathalie Joachim on Saturday, April 13. Tickets are $12-18.
  • That same night, artist and poet Rena Ivy opens a new solo exhibition titled All the Little Springs at The Mansion 731. The opening reception is free to attend.
  • On Sunday, April 14, CAPA hosts its celebration of The Day of the Children/El Día de los Niños at the Lincoln Theatre. The festivities include music, dance, crafts, theater, food truck and more. It’s free but it’s best to register in advance.
  • Sunday also brings the next screening in the Gateway Film Center’s Pioneers of African American Cinema series. This month it’s Oscar Micheaux’s 1931 feature The Exile. Tickets are $10-15.

CAPA, Gateway Film Center, Glass Axis and Wexner Center for the Arts receive an Operating Support grant from GCAC, while Available Light Theatre is a General Support recipient. A Tribe For Jazz and Franklinton Arts District are Project Support recipients.
